Pedne, Goa 26 August 2025: In a shocking revelation, despite the Pollution Control Board’s orders and the sealing of a Ganesh idol shop in Agarwada by the Pedne Mamlatdar and the Deputy Collector’s office, it has emerged that late at night, POP (Plaster of Paris) Ganesh idols were illegally taken away from the sealed premises using rickshaws and other vehicles.
Environmental activists have strongly reacted, calling the action against POP idols nothing but an “eyewash,” as the idols continued to be moved and sold despite the official sealing.
On Monday, officials including Santosh Gadekar (Talathi), Latesh Vayangankar (clerk), and Bhushan Naik (clerk), in the presence of shop owner Omkar Toraskar, inspected and sealed the shop selling POP idols. However, by nightfall, idols from the shop were reportedly smuggled out and distributed elsewhere.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the transportation of idols continued throughout Tuesday, raising serious concerns over the enforcement of the ban. Despite a clear prohibition on POP idols due to environmental hazards, they were openly kept for sale for over a month in the same establishment.
Locals are questioning the sincerity of the action, as the idols, though sealed by authorities, were freely moved later. Citizens allege that such incidents expose the weakness in implementation and monitoring by the authorities.
Environmentalists have demanded stricter vigilance and accountability, stating that mere symbolic actions will not help curb pollution caused by POP idols.
