• National Security Measures: The bill introduces provisions to deny entry to foreigners deemed a “threat to national security,” enhancing the government’s ability to safeguard the nation.

Opposition’s Concerns

The introduction of the bill has met with resistance from opposition parties. Congress MP Manish Tewari labeled the bill “unconstitutional,” arguing that it violates fundamental rights on multiple counts. He highlighted the absence of an appeal mechanism against decisions taken by immigration officers as a significant concern.

Further objections were raised regarding the bill’s potential to infringe upon constitutional provisions and fundamental rights. Opposition members have called for the bill to be referred to a Parliamentary select committee for detailed scrutiny before its passage.

Government’s Stance

Defending the bill, Nityanand Rai stated that the proposed legislation is not intended “to stop anyone from coming to India.” He emphasized that the bill aims to replace outdated laws with a comprehensive framework to better manage immigration and enhance national security.
