Kolkata, January 20: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has expressed its approval of the Kolkata sessions court’s decision in the shocking case of rape and murder at R.G. Kar Medical College. The judgment, which sentenced the accused to life imprisonment, was seen as a significant step toward justice for the victim and a stern message to deter such heinous crimes.
The NCW stated that while the prosecution strongly advocated for a guilty verdict, it was satisfied with the court’s final decision. “Justice has been served, and this verdict reflects the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring accountability in cases of violence against women,” said an NCW spokesperson.
The case, which garnered nationwide outrage, involved the brutal assault and murder of a young woman on the college campus. The NCW had actively monitored the proceedings and provided support to the victim’s family throughout the trial.
The NCW reaffirmed its stand on the importance of stricter laws and swift trials in cases involving crimes against women. “This judgment is a reminder that such acts of violence will not go unpunished,” the spokesperson added.
The verdict has been widely welcomed by women’s rights activists, who have long demanded stronger actions against perpetrators of gender-based violence.
