Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out of Champions Trophy 2025; Harshit Rana Named Replacement
In a major setback for Team India, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been officially ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a lower back injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed late Tuesday night.
After weeks of uncertainty over his fitness, the selectors finally decided to replace Bumrah with young pacer Harshit Rana in the final 15-member squad. This marks a big moment for the 23-year-old fast bowler, who has impressed in domestic cricket and the IPL.
However, the 31-year-old Bumrah has not been able to recover in time, despite being advised five weeks of rest following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year.
Pacer Harshit Rana Gets a Big Opportunity
Harshit Rana, who was handed his ODI debut during the recent series against England, has shown promise by picking up four wickets in two games. His raw pace and ability to bowl in the death overs have earned him a spot in the final squad for the prestigious tournament.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Out, Varun Chakaravarthy In
In another surprising move, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been left out of the squad, making way for 33-year-old mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Initially not part of the provisional squad, Chakaravarthy’s inclusion hints at India’s plan to strengthen its spin department for the tournament.
BCCI’s Official Statement
“Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement. Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially named in the provisional squad,” the BCCI said in an official release.

Can India Overcome Bumrah’s Absence?
