Nicholas Pooran Announces Retirement from International Cricket at 29

Port of Spain, June 10: In a move that has stunned fans and cricketing circles alike, former West Indies white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran on Tuesday announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. The announcement comes less than a year after he expressed a desire to continue playing for years to come.

Pooran, a dynamic left-handed batter from Trinidad, made his international debut in 2016 and quickly became a mainstay in West Indies’ limited-overs teams. Over the course of his career, he amassed 1,983 runs in 61 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 2,275 runs in 106 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), known for his aggressive strokeplay and match-winning abilities.

The announcement came via his official Instagram account, where he wrote:

“After much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international cricket. This game we love has given and will continue to give so much – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies.”

He further added:

“Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.”

Pooran’s decision comes shortly after he opted out of the T20I series against England, citing the need for rest. This sudden retirement is especially surprising given that during his 100th T20I appearance in November 2024, he had confidently stated that he “could play 100 more T20Is.”

In his heartfelt farewell message, Pooran thanked fans, teammates, friends, and family for their unwavering support and concluded with a touching tribute:

“Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead.”

The cricketing world has started pouring in tributes and messages of admiration for Pooran, recognizing his contribution to West Indies cricket and his role as a leader during a transitional phase for the team.

Pooran is expected to continue featuring in various T20 leagues around the world, where he remains in high demand as a powerful finisher and an experienced campaigner.
