Domestic markets end flat on first day of New Year

Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, ended new year’s first trading session on a flat note. The indices opened in positive territory, but could not sustain the momentum and traded in a range throughout the day. The Sensex dropped 32 points, to close at 85 thousand and 189, while the Nifty added 17 points, to settle at 26 thousand and 147. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange also displayed mixed trend. The Mid-Cap index gained almost 0.3 per cent and the Small-Cap index dipped marginally. 


In the Sensex pack, 21 out of 30 companies ended with gains. In the top gainers, NTPC surged almost 2.1 per cent, Eternal rose over two per cent and Mahindra and Mahindra added 1.4 per cent. Among the top laggards, ITC shed 9.7 per cent, Bajaj Finance lost nearly one and half a per cent and Asian Paints dipped over 0.6 per cent.
Across sectoral indices at the BSE, 18 out of 22 sectors edged higher. In the gainers, Telecommunication climbed 1.7 per cent, Utilities gained one and half a per cent and Power rose over 1.1 per cent.  Among the top laggards, FMCG dropped almost three per cent, Healthcare dipped over 0.1 per cent and Oil and Gas as well as Consumer Durables lost nearly 0.1 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 2 thousand 211 advanced, 1 thousand 952 companies declined, and 172 remained unchanged
