Chief Medical Officer’s Suspension Sparks Outrage Among Medical Fraternity in Goa
IMA Goa Strongly Condemns Health Minister Vishwajit Rane’s Action
Panaji, June 7, 2025: In a strongly worded press release, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Goa State Branch has condemned the suspension of a senior Chief Medical Officer by Goa’s Health Minister Vishwajit Rane. The suspension, which was carried out during a surprise visit to the emergency ward of Goa Medical College (GMC), has drawn sharp criticism from the medical community across the state.
According to the IMA, the Health Minister, accompanied by media personnel, entered the emergency department and abruptly suspended the senior doctor based solely on a telephonic complaint from a press reporter—without any formal inquiry or giving the doctor a chance to respond.
In the press note released today, the IMA expressed deep disappointment over what it described as a “public humiliation and emotional assault” of a duty-bound medical professional. “Such an action is deeply regrettable and unacceptable,” stated Dr. Dattaram Desai of IMA Goa. “It bypasses due process, ignores natural justice, and undermines the morale and dignity of the entire medical community.”
The IMA emphasized that any grievances, however serious, should be addressed through a fair and transparent process. The association called upon the state government to immediately revoke the suspension and reinstate the doctor. The IMA also demanded a structured mechanism for grievance redressal that respects the rights and professional standing of medical practitioners.
“This arbitrary and high-handed behavior sets a dangerous precedent,” said Dr. Aaron Soares, President of IMA Goa. “IMA Goa State firmly stands with the victimized doctor and urges the authorities to ensure justice and restore professional integrity.”
The incident has sparked widespread concern among healthcare professionals, with many expressing fears over increasing political interference in medical affairs.
