In a joint press statement held after delegation-level talks with the newly-elected President of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment as a “first responder” for the Maldives in times of need. PM Modi emphasized India’s long-standing role in supporting its smaller island neighbor in various crises and natural calamities.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted several instances when India stepped up, including providing essential commodities, ensuring the availability of drinking water during natural disasters, and delivering COVID-19 vaccines to Maldives at critical times. He underscored that the relationship between India and the Maldives is rooted in centuries-old ties, with India being its closest neighbor and a steadfast friend.

PM Modi also reiterated that the Maldives holds an integral place in India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and its strategic “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) Vision, which seeks to foster regional maritime cooperation and security.

As a significant gesture of cooperation, Prime Minister Modi, along with President Muizzu, virtually inaugurated the new runway of Hanimaadhoo International Airport in Maldives. Furthermore, RuPay card payments were introduced in the Maldives, marking a significant milestone in financial cooperation between the two nations. The leaders witnessed the first-ever RuPay transaction in the country.
