Panjim: Former Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, urging Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant to immediately suspend the minister over his alleged “disgraceful behaviour” towards a senior doctor at the Goa Medical College (GMC).

Chodankar demanded that Rane be treated with the same approach he himself follows in his department. “If Mr Rane, claiming to be the boss, believes that he can suspend a doctor without even listening to his side of the story, then the Chief Minister must apply the same principle. Suspend Mr Rane and give him a hearing only during the inquiry,” said Chodankar.

Condemning what he described as “autocratic behaviour” displayed by Rane with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at GMC’s casualty ward, Chodankar called it a clear abuse of power. He said the incident reflects the minister’s biased and unprofessional attitude.

“Instead of addressing the matter with maturity and basic human decency, the Minister opted for public humiliation over constructive dialogue. Regardless of whether the doctor was at fault, denying him the fundamental right to be heard and insulting him in front of juniors and patients is wholly unacceptable,” Chodankar stated.

He further said that such behaviour undermines both the dignity of healthcare professionals and the moral authority of public office. “This is not governance; this is arrogance. The Goa government and GMC have clearly laid down disciplinary procedures, which the Health Minister has blatantly violated,” Chodankar added.

Chodankar called for a formal and public apology from Rane, along with his immediate dismissal pending a full inquiry into the incident.

The controversy has sparked strong reactions within political and medical circles, with many closely watching the Chief Minister’s next move.
