Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station: 18 Dead, Dozens Injured
New Delhi, February 16: A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station late Saturday night has claimed the lives of at least 18 people, with dozens injured, as per official sources. The incident occurred around 9:55 p.m. at platform number 14-15, where a sudden surge of passengers trying to board a Prayagraj-bound train led to chaos.
Among the deceased, 11 are women and 5 are children. The injured victims have been rushed to LNJP Hospital and RML Hospital for treatment.
Government Response
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed on social media that the situation is now under control. He stated that four special trains were immediately deployed for the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj to manage the crowd. Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives, Mr. Vaishnaw assured that the authorities are actively assisting those affected.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief, stating that he is distressed by the tragedy. He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Authorities Take Action
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has spoken to Mr. Vaishnaw, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, and other officials to ensure all possible help is provided.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed condolences, saying he is deeply pained by the incident and praying for the quick recovery of those injured.
Compensation Announced
The Railway Ministry has announced compensation for those affected by the tragedy:
- ₹10 lakhs for the families of the deceased
- ₹2.5 lakhs for those seriously injured
- ₹1 lakh for those with minor injuries
Security Measures Strengthened
In response to the tragedy, security at New Delhi Railway Station has been heightened, and assistance is being provided to passengers.
Acting Chief Minister Atishi visited LNJP Hospital to meet the injured victims.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation, ensuring that passenger safety remains the top priority.
