New Delhi, January 20, 2025: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has penned heartfelt letters to Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, drawing their attention to the harrowing conditions faced by patients and their families outside the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. His letters highlight the plight of those braving Delhi’s severe winter with limited resources, inadequate shelter, and a lack of basic facilities.
In his letter to J.P. Nadda, Gandhi emphasized the systemic healthcare challenges faced by crores of Indians. He acknowledged the excellent care provided by AIIMS Delhi but pointed out that its overwhelming burden underscores the lack of accessible, affordable healthcare elsewhere in the country. Gandhi urged the government to work with AIIMS leadership, Delhi authorities, and charitable organizations to provide immediate relief such as heating, bedding, drinking water, and expanded accommodation facilities.
Furthermore, he suggested measures to tackle systemic issues, such as operationalizing new AIIMS facilities across India, strengthening public healthcare infrastructure, and expanding the Ayushman Bharat scheme to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for patients. He also called for scrutinizing the rising costs of private healthcare.
To Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, Gandhi urged the state government to step in and provide immediate aid, including shelter, heating, and sanitation for patients and their families. He encouraged collaboration with the central government, AIIMS, and NGOs to implement long-term solutions for patient accommodation.
Calling the situation a “pressing humanitarian issue,” Gandhi assured both leaders of his full support in any efforts to alleviate the suffering of patients and their families.
The letters highlight the ongoing challenges in India’s healthcare system and call for collective action to improve conditions for vulnerable citizens seeking medical care.
