NHRC Orders On-Spot Inquiry into Alleged Suicide of Nepali Student at KIIT University

Bhubaneswar, Odisha – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken swift action in the tragic case of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student who allegedly died by suicide at KIIT University last month. The Commission has ordered an on-spot inquiry into the incident, citing the seriousness of the allegations surrounding her death.

Prakriti, a student at the prestigious KIIT University, was found dead on the night of February 16. Reports suggest that she had been facing harassment within the university, and her repeated complaints to the authorities allegedly went unheard. This failure to address her grievances is believed to have contributed to her tragic decision.

In response to the growing outcry for justice, the NHRC has directed its Registrar (Law) and two officers from the Investigation Division to visit the university and conduct a thorough inquiry. The team has been instructed to submit a detailed report by March 10.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, with students, activists, and human rights organizations demanding accountability from KIIT University. Many are calling for stricter measures to ensure the safety and well-being of students, particularly those from marginalized communities.

Prakriti’s death has also highlighted the need for universities to establish robust mechanisms to address harassment and mental health concerns. As the investigation unfolds, the NHRC’s findings will be crucial in determining whether systemic failures contributed to this tragedy.

The hashtag #JusticeForPrakriti has been trending on social media, with netizens demanding transparency and justice for the young student. Meanwhile, the Nepali community in India and abroad has expressed deep sorrow and anger over the incident, urging authorities to ensure such tragedies are not repeated.

KIIT University has yet to release an official statement regarding the allegations. However, the NHRC’s intervention has raised hopes that the truth will be uncovered and appropriate action taken.

As the nation awaits the inquiry report, Prakriti’s story serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need to address harassment and mental health issues in educational institutions.
