New District and Sessions Court Complex Inaugurated in Merces, North Goa

Merces, Goa – In a significant development for the judiciary and legal system in Goa, the new building of the North Goa District and Sessions Court was inaugurated today by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. The ceremony witnessed the presence of several esteemed dignitaries, including Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, Justice Abhay S. Oka of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Law and Environment Minister Shri Aleixo Sequeira, and Advocate General Adv. Devidas Pangam.

The new court complex at Merces, designed to enhance judicial infrastructure, will house both civil and criminal courts. Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized the importance of robust infrastructure in ensuring efficient judicial functioning and maintaining public trust in the legal system. He expressed confidence that the state-of-the-art facility would boost the efficiency of the courts and facilitate timely justice for the people of Goa.

Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting the judiciary in its efforts to deliver justice. “This new complex marks a milestone in Goa’s judicial landscape and will go a long way in addressing the needs of the growing caseload,” he stated.

The event was graced by several other prominent figures, including Justice Rajesh Bindal, Justice Prasanna B. Varale, and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh of the Supreme Court, along with Shri Pravin Faldessai, Deputy Solicitor General of India for Goa, and Shri Rodolfo Fernandes, MLA. Chief Secretary Shri Puneet Kumar Goel, IAS, also attended the occasion, reflecting the administration’s strong support for the judiciary.

Law and Judiciary Minister Shri Aleixo Sequeira lauded the efforts involved in bringing the project to completion and stressed the significance of having modern judicial infrastructure. “This complex is a testament to our collective efforts to ensure that the judiciary is equipped with the necessary tools to serve the public efficiently,” he said.

The inauguration of the new complex marks a significant step toward strengthening the legal infrastructure in Goa, contributing to a more responsive and effective judicial system. With the new building now operational, it is expected to streamline court proceedings, reduce delays, and offer an improved experience to both the judiciary and the public.

This milestone is part of the broader efforts to modernize Goa’s legal framework and ensure that justice remains accessible, transparent, and efficient for all.
