Nagpur Violence: Maharashtra Government to Take Strict Action, Says Union Minister Pralhad Joshi
Prohibitory Orders Imposed in Nagpur After Communal Clashes
Nagpur witnessed communal tensions last evening after rumours of religious vandalism triggered violence in the Mahal area. The situation escalated as two groups clashed, resulting in stone pelting and vehicle torching.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi assured that the Maharashtra government will take strict action against those responsible. Speaking outside Parliament, he stated that the state government is efficiently managing the situation.
Political Reactions and Allegations
Shiv Sena (Shinde) MP Naresh Mhaske claimed the violence was a conspiracy by the opposition and alleged that outsiders were involved in inciting the clashes. Meanwhile, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari urged for peace and demanded strict action against the culprits.
On the other hand, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the Maharashtra government, alleging that law and order have collapsed under the current administration.
Police Action and Security Measures
To control the situation, police used tear gas and cane charges in Chitnis Park and Mahal. Cyber teams analyzed CCTV footage, leading to the arrest of 15 anti-social elements involved in the riots.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singal has imposed Section 163 of the BNSS (Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita) to restrict public gatherings in sensitive areas. Additional police forces, including SPRF teams, have been deployed to prevent further escalation.
Appeals for Peace
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have appealed to citizens not to believe in rumours and to maintain peace. However, incidents of vehicle torching and property damage were reported in other parts of Nagpur late at night.
Nagpur’s Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule is set to visit the Mahal area at 10 AM to assess the situation.
