MLA Krishna Salkar Urges Installation of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Statue at IOC Junction in Vasco

Vasco-da-Gama, June 13, 2025 – In a significant move to honour the legacy of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, Shri Krishna V. Salkar, MLA of the Vasco-da-Gama Constituency, has formally proposed the installation of a statue of the revered social reformer and architect of the Indian Constitution at the prominent IOC junction in Vasco.

In an official letter addressed to the Chief Officer of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), Shri Salkar emphasized the enduring impact of Dr Ambedkar on Indian society, law, and governance. Highlighting Ambedkar’s role in shaping modern India, Salkar noted, “Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar continues to be a beacon of light, not only for his fight against social discrimination but also for his pioneering role in drafting the Indian Constitution.”

The proposal, calls for the matter to be placed on the agenda of the upcoming council meeting, requesting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from MMC to facilitate the statue’s installation. The MLA also assured full cooperation in obtaining all necessary permissions from local authorities, including the district police and subsidiary departments.

Salkar’s letter further underscores the cultural and inspirational importance of the initiative:

“This statue will serve as a source of inspiration to future generations. It will instil in them the values of Indianness, nationalism, and the duty to serve society.”

He also pointed out the growing admiration for Dr Ambedkar’s ideals across all segments of Goan society, particularly his contributions to education, social justice, and affirmative action. The move has garnered widespread support from local NGOs, including Niz Goenkar Fauz and Goa First, as well as prominent citizens, educationists, and community leaders.

These supporters believe that a towering statue at the IOC junction would serve not only as a tribute but also as an educational landmark where citizens, especially youth, can reflect on Ambedkar’s contributions to democracy, equality, and justice.
