This event is a tribute to his selfless service, and we invite the people of Goa to join in honoring his memory.”
Lieutenant Narendra Atmaram Mayekar (SC-00135), of the 11th Sikh Regiment, was born in Rumdawada, Mormugao. He displayed extraordinary valor and an indomitable spirit, making the supreme sacrifice in the best traditions of the Indian Army.
On February 26, 2000, based on specific intelligence, he led a search operation in a village in Assam, where hardcore ULFA militants were hiding. As he approached a house, he was fired upon and sustained a bullet wound in the abdomen. Undeterred by his injuries, he charged into the house, engaged in hand-to-hand combat, and eliminated two militants. His bravery inspired his regiment, leading to the neutralization of three more militants and the recovery of arms, ammunition, and crucial documents. Despite his critical condition, he refused to be evacuated until the mission was completed. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries after ensuring victory for his team.
For his unparalleled courage and selfless dedication, Lieutenant Narendra Atmaram Mayekar was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
To honor his memory, a government school in Headland Sada has been named after him, ensuring that his heroic story continues to inspire generations.
The Martyr’s Day Ceremony at Sada Junction will see the participation of family members, military officials, local leaders, and citizens, all gathering to pay homage to this brave son of Goa.
