Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh – The Mahakumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, is expected to generate a staggering $23 billion for India’s economy, according to government estimates. Held once every 12 years in Prayagraj, this six-week-long event attracts millions of pilgrims, making it a major economic driver for the region and the country.

This year’s Mahakumbh has garnered significant attention from global consumer goods companies, which are investing heavily in marketing to tap into the vast and diverse audience. Industry giants like Nestlé, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever, and Reckitt Benckiser have launched large-scale promotional campaigns targeting attendees ranging from farmers and traders to corporate professionals and spiritual seekers.

According to Harish Bijoor, an independent brand consultant, companies are estimated to spend Rs 36 billion ($310 million) on advertising and promotions during the festival. This massive investment underscores the festival’s importance as a platform for boosting brand visibility and sales, especially at a time when India’s consumer spending is slowing.

Beyond corporate investments, the Mahakumbh Mela significantly impacts local businesses. Hotels, transport services, food vendors, and handicrafts are witnessing a surge in demand as millions of devotees make their way to Prayagraj. The influx of pilgrims also leads to job creation in multiple sectors, strengthening the local economy and driving regional development.
