Austin, Texas – A peaceful civic engagement event at the Texas State Capitol turned controversial on Tuesday when Valentina Gomez, a former Republican congressional candidate and known MAGA supporter, stormed the stage and launched into an anti-Islam tirade.
The incident occurred during Texas Muslim Capitol Day, a long-standing event organized to promote civic participation and interfaith dialogue within the Muslim community. Attended by families, students, and religious leaders, the gathering includes prayer sessions, training, and meetings with state legislators.
In a widely circulated video on social media, Gomez is seen grabbing the microphone from organizers and declaring, “Islam has no place in Texas. Help me to Congress so we can end the Islamisation of America. I only fear God.” She later reposted the footage on X (formerly Twitter), doubling down on her rhetoric and appealing for political support.
The outburst was met with swift backlash from civil rights organizations. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a statement condemning Gomez’s actions, calling them “dangerous, bigoted, and deeply un-American.” CAIR also urged political leaders to reject such hate speech and reaffirm the nation’s commitment to religious freedom.
“This type of behavior seeks to intimidate and silence religious minorities,” said Mustafa Carroll, Executive Director of CAIR-Texas. “We expect those in leadership or aspiring to office to uphold the Constitution, not trample on it.”
No arrests have been reported, but authorities are investigating the disruption as a potential violation of public order laws. The Muslim community, meanwhile, continues to call for respectful engagement and unity in the face of growing intolerance.
#IslamHasNoPlaceInTexas has since trended online, drawing a mixture of support and condemnation. Many netizens, activists, and faith leaders have responded with counter-hashtags promoting inclusivity, such as #MuslimsBelong, #TexasForAll, and #ReligiousFreedomMatters.
The incident adds to a growing list of political provocations fueled by rising Islamophobia and right-wing extremism in the United States.
