Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao Raises Strong Objection to Proposed Power Tariff Hike in Goa
Panaji, Goa: In a firm response to the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (JERC) proposal to hike electricity tariffs in Goa, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has submitted a formal objection, citing concerns over the burden it would place on common consumers. The objection is in reference to Petition Nos. 140/2025 and 141/2025, which propose a revision in power tariffs for the 4th Control Period (FY 2025-26 to FY 2029-30). A public hearing was held today.
Alemao, in his detailed letter to the Secretary of JERC, has expressed “strong opposition” to the proposed hike, warning that the move could worsen the economic strain already faced by Goan households and small businesses.
“The hike will lead to higher living costs, impacting the already strained budgets of many Goans,” Alemao wrote. He urged the Commission to prioritize consumer welfare and explore alternative solutions to address financial challenges in the power sector.
He pointed out the failure of the Goa Electricity Department to recover over Rs 600 crore in dues from industries and commercial entities, suggesting that retrieving these funds would be a more responsible approach than burdening the public with higher tariffs.
Alemao also reminded the Commission that in January 2022, despite JERC approving a tariff hike, the state government froze the increase ahead of elections — a move that revealed selective prioritization based on political considerations.
He questioned the credibility of the Electricity Department, noting its unfulfilled commitment to not propose any tariff hikes until March 2025. He also criticized the Department’s silence on his January 2023 public appeal demanding transparency in power loss and revenue data.
“I place on record my Objection to the proposed Hike in Power Tariff by the Electricity Department, Government of Goa. JERC should not decide on the Petition till the Department provides a complete and updated Proforma Account for scrutiny,” he emphasized.
As public backlash grows against rising costs and inflation, Alemao’s stand reflects the sentiment of many Goans hoping for relief rather than additional burdens.
