Israeli Drone Strikes Kill Two in Southern Lebanon: Conflicting Claims Over Victims’ Identities
By Newsbabaonline
Southern Lebanon, May 22, 2025 — The Israeli military has announced the killing of a commander from Hezbollah’s elite Radwan force in a drone strike carried out in the Yater area of southern Lebanon. The name of the commander has not been disclosed. According to the Israeli statement, the strike targeted a high-ranking figure involved in Hezbollah’s operational command.
However, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) has offered a conflicting narrative, reporting that the victim was a civilian engaged in clearing rubble from his home using an excavator when the strike occurred.
In a separate incident, the Israeli military confirmed responsibility for the assassination of Hussein Nazih Barji, allegedly a Hezbollah operative involved in the group’s weapons development program. This strike took place in the Tyre region of southern Lebanon. While the NNA confirmed a drone attack occurred in Tyre, it did not verify Barji’s affiliation with Hezbollah, instead reporting that the identity and affiliation of the victim remain unconfirmed.
These recent developments mark a dangerous escalation in tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, which has witnessed sporadic exchanges of fire since the beginning of the Gaza conflict. The use of drone strikes has significantly increased in recent weeks, further endangering civilian lives and exacerbating regional instability.
As narratives diverge between military sources and independent news agencies, the true impact on the ground remains uncertain, with civilians caught in the crossfire.
