November 22, 2024: Indian Railways is on the brink of a revolutionary breakthrough with the planned trial of the nation’s first hydrogen-powered train. Slated to run on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, the trial is expected to commence in January 2025, marking a significant stride toward sustainable and eco-friendly transportation.

What Makes the Hydrogen Train Unique?

Developed by the Integral Coach Factory in Tamil Nadu, this hydrogen-powered train operates on advanced fuel cell technology. By combining hydrogen and oxygen, these cells generate electricity, releasing only water vapour as a byproduct. Capable of speeds up to 140 km/h, the train is a vital step in Indian Railways’ goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Key Features and Investments

Project Cost: Each hydrogen train costs ₹80 crore, with an additional ₹70 crore earmarked for infrastructure.

Pilot Projects: A Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) retrofit with hydrogen fuel cells is underway, costing ₹111.83 crore.

Maintenance Vehicles: Five hydrogen-based tower cars are being developed at ₹10 crore each to support operations.

Safety and Global Standards

To ensure safety and operational efficiency, Indian Railways has partnered with Germany’s TUV-SUD for a third-party safety assessment. This aligns India with global leaders like Germany, France, Sweden, and China, which have already adopted hydrogen-powered trains.

While initial running costs are higher, economies of scale are expected to reduce them over time. The benefits include:
