Health Minister Vishwajit Rane Breaks Silence on Goa Medical College Casualty Incident: “Will Always Stand by the Patients”

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane Breaks Silence on Goa Medical College Casualty Incident: “Will Always Stand by the Patients”
Panaji, June 7 – In a bold and heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Goa’s Health Minister Vishwajit Rane addressed the controversy surrounding an incident at Goa Medical College’s (GMC) casualty ward earlier today, where a senior citizen was reportedly denied a prescribed injection by the Casualty Medical Officer (CMO).
The minister confirmed his personal intervention in the matter and acknowledged that while his tone may have been sharp, his intentions were rooted in compassion and accountability.
“Over the last few hours, a lot has been said and written about an incident at Goa Medical College today involving and suspending a doctor on duty. I feel it is important to address this directly, not just as your Health Minister, but as someone deeply committed to ensuring that no citizen is ever denied basic medical care, especially the elderly who deserve our utmost respect and attention,” wrote Rane in his detailed post.
The incident came to light after a family member of the elderly patient sent a message to the minister, expressing distress over how the patient was turned away from the casualty despite low patient load and ample staff availability.
Family’s Account Sparks Ministerial Action
The relative wrote:
“My mother-in-law is undergoing treatment in the Orthopaedic OPD and is supposed to receive 10 injections daily. Since today was a public holiday, we were directed to the casualty for the injection. But the CMO at the casualty refused, stating it was not an emergency. Despite there being barely any patients, and the nurses free, the CMO insisted we go elsewhere. Only after repeated requests was the injection finally given in the orthopaedic ward.”
Vishwajit Rane responded swiftly upon receiving the message and paid a visit to the hospital. He admitted that while his language may have been strong, his commitment to ensuring justice for the elderly patient took precedence.
“Yes, as the Health Minister, I did intervene and I accept that my tone and words could have been more measured. I’m not above reflection or criticism. I take full responsibility for how I communicated, and I assure you, such an approach will not be repeated,” Rane stated.
Minister Defends Action, Calls for Compassion in Care
While apologizing for the manner of his communication, Rane firmly stood by his actions and the decision to suspend the CMO involved.
“What I will not apologise for is standing up for a patient who was denied care. Doctors hold a noble position in society, and most of them at GMC serve with great dedication. But when arrogance seeps into duty, when compassion is replaced with indifference, it is my responsibility to take action.”
Rane also pointed out the double standards in public discourse, where medical staff are criticized for negligence, but corrective actions by authorities are scrutinized.
“When corrective action is taken, it is equally important that we support efforts to fix the system, not tear them down.”
Call for Better Patient Care Culture
The minister concluded his message with a strong appeal for empathy and accountability in the healthcare system.
“Let us strive together for better services, more empathy, and a culture of healing that respects both the medical profession and the patients we are here to serve.”
Public Reactions Pour In
While many applauded the minister’s stand in defense of the elderly patient, some voices on social media raised questions about due process and appropriate channels for disciplinary action. However, the overwhelming sentiment echoed support for compassionate and responsive governance in the public healthcare system.
As the investigation into the incident continues, this episode has reignited debates about patient rights, staff conduct in public hospitals, and the responsibilities of elected officials in safeguarding citizen welfare.
