Gyanesh Kumar Assumes Charge as India’s 26th Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi, February 19, 2025—Gyanesh Kumar, a distinguished retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1988 Kerala cadre, assumed the role of the 26th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India today. His tenure is set to extend until January 26, 2029, overseeing the forthcoming general elections and several state assembly elections.

Kumar’s appointment follows a decision by a three-member committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 17, 2025. Notably, he is the first CEC appointed under the new law governing the selection of Election Commission members.

Career Highlights:

  • Ministry of Cooperation (May 2022 – January 2024): As Secretary, Kumar oversaw significant reforms, including the enactment of the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Act, 2023. This legislation led to the formation of three national cooperative bodies: Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited (BBSSL), National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL), and National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL).
  • Ministry of Home Affairs (2019 – 2021): Serving as Additional Secretary, Kumar played a pivotal role during the abrogation of Article 370, facilitating the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir. He was instrumental in establishing the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetra Trust for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
  • Ministry of Defence (2007 – 2012): As Joint Secretary (Defence Production), Kumar contributed to various defense production initiatives during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Kumar’s extensive experience in governance and administration is expected to enhance the Election Commission’s efforts in conducting free and fair elections across the nation.
