GST Shock for Big Bikes: Prices of Royal Enfield, KTM, Harley & Jawa May Shoot Up!
New Delhi: India’s love affair with big motorcycles could soon come at a much higher price. The Central Government has proposed a steep hike in Goods and Services Tax (GST) on two-wheelers with engine capacity above 350cc, raising it from the current 31% (28% GST + 3% cess) to a massive 40%.
The proposal will be tabled at the GST Council meeting in September, and if approved, it could send shockwaves through the country’s premium bike segment.
This tax reform aims to simplify the slab structure, keeping only two categories:
- 18% GST for small motorcycles
- 40% GST for big motorcycles above 350cc
Motorcycles from brands like Royal Enfield, KTM, Harley-Davidson, and Jawa, which already carry a hefty price tag, will get even costlier—by thousands to lakhs of rupees.
For India’s middle-class biking enthusiasts, who often save for years to own their dream machine, this could be a severe blow. The move is being seen as a direct hit on premium and enthusiast-driven motorcycles that define India’s modern riding culture.
Industry watchers warn that the hike could slow down demand, discourage first-time big-bike buyers, and hurt the growing premium motorcycle segment in India.
As the decision hangs in balance, all eyes are now on the September Council meet to see whether the government pushes through this bold move.
