Gudhi Padwa marks the beginning of the traditional Hindu New Year and is widely celebrated in Goa & Maharashtra. It falls on the first day of the Chaitra month as per the Hindu lunisolar calendar. The festival is believed to commemorate the coronation of Lord Rama after his return to Ayodhya and also symbolizes the victory of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj against foreign rule.
The celebration of Gudhi Padwa involves the hoisting of the “Gudhi” (a decorated flag-like arrangement) outside homes, signifying prosperity and good fortune. It is considered an auspicious day for new beginnings, and people indulge in prayers, cultural performances, and festive meals.
