Govt Warns OTT Platforms: Follow Age-Based Content Rules Under IT Rules 2021

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a strong directive to over-the-top (OTT) platforms, urging them to strictly follow age-based content classification guidelines as per the Code of Ethics under the IT Rules, 2021. The advisory comes amid growing concerns over inappropriate content on digital platforms.

The move follows a recent controversy involving YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, during an episode of India’s Got Latent. His comments sparked public outrage and legal scrutiny, prompting authorities to tighten oversight on online content.

In an official directive, Deputy Secretary Amarendra Singh reminded streaming services and their self-regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with the law and proactively address violations. The Supreme Court also raised concerns about online content, with a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh labeling certain content as “perverse.” The court has sought the central government’s response on improving regulations.

“We would like to do something. If the government will willingly do it, we will be very happy,” the court remarked, hinting at possible stricter regulations if the government fails to act.

The ministry has received several complaints from parliamentarians, statutory bodies, and the general public regarding alleged obscene or vulgar content on various OTT and social media platforms. This advisory aims to safeguard viewers—especially minors—and ensure responsible digital media programming in India’s expanding OTT space.

As digital consumption grows, the government’s focus on content regulation signals a shift toward stricter enforcement to maintain ethical standards in the industry.
