Mollo, Pale Village: The Department of Survey & Land Records (DSLR) resumed the demarcation process for the proposed second railway track in the jurisdiction of VP Velsao, Pale & Issorcim today, amid heightened tensions between locals and authorities. The event witnessed emotional outbursts, heated debates, and a strong display of resilience from the villagers, led by activist Orville Dourado Rodrigues and the team of Goencho Ekvott.

At the onset, the villagers fiercely criticized Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) officials for reneging on an earlier agreement to halt construction activities post 6:00 pm. The situation escalated into an intense debate, with the railway contractor being confronted under the watchful eyes of a large police force from the Goa Police and Railway Protection Force. Eventually, senior RVNL official Mr. Sadhashivan agreed to comply with the villagers’ demands to cease construction activities after 6:00 pm, albeit only after the villagers pleaded for a semblance of peace during nighttime.

Villagers’ Desperation and Distress

The installation of demarcation markers left the villagers deeply distressed. Facing the grim reality of losing their homes to the proposed railway track, some residents expressed a willingness to take drastic steps, including suicide, rather than witness the destruction of their legally built houses.

The project threatens to displace at least 6-8 families, rendering their residences uninhabitable as essential spaces like bathrooms and kitchens will be demolished. This has left many questioning how they can sustain their lives in the absence of basic facilities.

Goencho Ekvott’s Support

Goencho Ekvott, a collective known for advocating people’s rights in Goa, empathized with the villagers’ plight and assured them of unwavering support in their struggle for justice. The team reaffirmed its commitment to fight for sustainable living and protect the rights of locals against disruptive projects.

Questions on Governance

Though the demarcation exercise concluded peacefully, the process has raised serious concerns about the role of the government. Many locals are questioning whether the authorities are genuinely upholding the constitutional rights of the people or merely catering to the demands of corporate greed.

A Call for Action

The unfolding events at Mollo, Pale, have become a symbol of the broader struggle between development and the preservation of local livelihoods. As the villagers brace for the next steps, the support from organizations like Goencho Ekvott remains crucial in ensuring their voices are heard.
