Goa Observes 70th Balidan Divas: CM Dr. Pramod Sawant Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Hutatma Bala Raya Mapari

Today, the state of Goa solemnly observed the 70th Balidan Divas (Martyrdom Day) in honor of Hutatma Bala Raya Mapari, the first freedom fighter to lay down his life during the armed struggle against Portuguese rule. The event, held at Assonora, was graced by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, who paid heartfelt tributes to the martyr and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving the legacy of Goa’s freedom fighters.

In his address, Dr. Sawant highlighted the sacrifices of Bala Raya Mapari and other brave souls who fought for Goa’s liberation. “Hutatma Bala Raya Mapari’s courage and sacrifice will forever remain etched in the hearts of Goans. We are committed to preserving and protecting the memory of our freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the liberation of Goa,” said the Chief Minister.

The event also marked the release of the newspaper ‘Bahujan Aawaz’, a significant initiative aimed at amplifying the voices of the Bahujan community. The ceremony was attended by WRD Minister Shri Subhash Shirodkar, Fisheries Minister Shri Nilkant Halarnkar, Zilla Panchayat member Diksha Kanolkar, and President of Goa Bhandari Samaj Shri Devanand Naik, among other dignitaries.

In a landmark announcement, the Goa government revealed plans to build a House of Bala Raya Mapari and erect a Smarak (memorial) to commemorate his legacy. This initiative aims to educate future generations about the sacrifices made during Goa’s freedom struggle.

During the event, Dr. Sawant also felicitated the families and spouses of freedom fighters, acknowledging their enduring contributions to Goa’s history. “It is our duty to honor the families of these brave souls who sacrificed everything for our freedom,” he added.

The 70th Balidan Divas served as a poignant reminder of Goa’s rich history and the sacrifices made by its freedom fighters. The event concluded with a collective resolve to uphold the values of freedom, justice, and equality that these martyrs fought for.
