A major controversy erupted in Goa over the weekend after Health Minister Vishwajit Rane ordered the suspension of Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar, Chief Medical Officer at the casualty ward of Goa Medical College (GMC), during a surprise inspection. The video of the incident, which captured the minister’s stern reprimand, went viral on social media, sparking a wave of both appreciation and criticism from the public and political leaders.
While some lauded the minister’s strong stance on accountability in healthcare, others—especially the Goa Congress—called the move “authoritarian” and “unwarranted.” The Congress party went so far as to demand that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant strip Rane of his health portfolio.
Amid growing public and political pressure, Chief Minister Sawant addressed the issue on Sunday via his official social media account. “I have reviewed the issue at Goa Medical College and held discussions with the Health Minister. I want to assure the people of Goa that Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar will not be suspended,” he stated. He further emphasized the government’s commitment to healthcare, lauding the tireless service of the medical fraternity.
In a bid to contain the fallout, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane issued a public apology through his social media handle on Monday. Referring to his interaction with a news Channel, Rane said,
“During the broadcast with Prudent Media last night, I openly extended my heartfelt apology to Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar for the harsh words spoken by me during my visit to GMC. In the heat of the moment, my emotions overtook my expression, and I deeply regret the manner in which I addressed the situation.”
He reiterated his respect for the medical profession and stressed that his intentions were never to demean any doctor but to ensure timely patient care. However, he also expressed concern over the disruption of services at GMC, urging doctors to reflect on their responsibilities.
“This issue is now unfortunately being politicised, turning a professional matter into a political confrontation. That is not the path we should follow,” Rane said. He called on all doctors to resume duty and put the welfare of patients first.
The incident has sparked a broader debate in Goa on the relationship between political authority and medical autonomy. While the controversy has highlighted systemic healthcare concerns, it also raises questions about administrative conduct and political interference in professional domains.
As the situation continues to unfold, all eyes remain on Goa Medical College, hoping that normalcy returns soon for the benefit of thousands of patients dependent on its services.
