Panaji, December 19: The state of Goa marked its 63rd Liberation Day today, commemorating its freedom from Portuguese rule in 1961. On this momentous occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant hoisted the National Flag at the Goa University Ground in Taleigao, paying tribute to the brave freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for Goa’s independence.
In his address, Dr. Sawant acknowledged the heroic efforts of the revolutionary freedom fighters and the Indian Armed Forces who played a pivotal role in ‘Operation Vijay,’ leading to the liberation of Goa from colonial oppression.
“My heartfelt tributes to the valiant Freedom Fighters who selflessly sacrificed their lives and relentlessly fought to free Goa from colonial rule. Their courage and dedication inspire us to uphold the values of freedom and justice,” said the Chief Minister.
Highlighting the strides Goa has made since liberation, Dr. Sawant emphasized the state’s developmental vision under initiatives like Swayampurna Goa and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He also outlined a commitment to sustainable tourism, robust infrastructure development, and social welfare programs to shape a progressive and inclusive future.
“As we honor their legacy, we are committed to building a Viksit Goa—a progressive and self-reliant state. Today, we honor the progressive journey of Goa’s development and the strides we’ve made towards achieving our dream of a ‘Golden Goa’. Let us work together towards the betterment of our state, aligning with the vision of Swayampurna and a Viksit Goa,” he added.
Goa Liberation Day celebrations were held across the state with patriotic zeal, featuring cultural performances, parades, and tributes to the sacrifices of the freedom fighters.
The day not only serves as a reminder of Goa’s hard-earned freedom but also as a call to its citizens to contribute to the state’s growth and development.
