Fuel Cutoff Caused Ahmedabad Air India Crash, Reveals AAIB Preliminary Report
Ahmedabad, July 12 — The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released its 15-page preliminary report into the tragic crash of Air India flight AI 171, which resulted in the loss of 260 lives on June 12th in Ahmedabad. The report uncovers chilling details about what led to the fatal accident involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
According to the report, the fuel supply to the aircraft’s engines was cut off within moments of takeoff. “Within seconds of liftoff, both engine fuel control switches of the aircraft transitioned from ‘RUN’ to ‘CUTOFF’ position one after another with a time gap of just one second,” the AAIB noted. This sudden loss of power caused the aircraft to plummet shortly after it left the runway.
The findings shed light on the final moments of flight AI 171 and raise serious questions about cockpit procedures, system malfunctions, or possible human error. The report, though preliminary, confirms that both engines were simultaneously shut down—not due to mechanical failure, but because the fuel supply was manually or electronically interrupted.
Aviation safety experts and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are now expected to review the detailed data to determine whether the cutoff was due to a technical fault, software anomaly, or pilot input.
The AAIB emphasized that a full and conclusive investigation is still underway, with data from the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), and other forensic evidence being examined.
