DoT Launches Financial Fraud Risk Indicator to Curb Cyber Frauds in Digital Payments

New Delhi, May 22, 2025:
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has unveiled a new initiative to bolster cybersecurity in digital financial transactions. Named the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI), this advanced analytical tool is designed to assist financial institutions in identifying and mitigating potential cyber frauds associated with mobile numbers.

The FRI serves as a multi-dimensional risk assessment tool, providing actionable intelligence that helps banks, Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), and UPI service providers to enhance verification and protection mechanisms. It classifies mobile numbers under three levels of risk: Medium, High, or Very High, based on their association with suspicious or fraudulent activities.

When a digital payment is proposed to a mobile number flagged by the FRI, the tool enables institutions to conduct extra validation checks, effectively preventing unauthorized or deceitful transactions. This real-time intelligence system empowers stakeholders to prioritize enforcement and strengthen customer protection, especially in high-risk cases.

The DoT has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of the digital ecosystem, especially as India continues its rapid shift towards cashless transactions.

Key Benefits of FRI:

With the launch of the FRI, India takes another significant step toward a secure and resilient digital finance ecosystem.
