Cricket Returns to the Olympics at LA28: A Historic Moment for the Sport

In a groundbreaking development for global sports enthusiasts, cricket is set to make a historic return to the Olympic Games at LA28, ending a 128-year absence. The Olympic Games in Los Angeles will feature both men’s and women’s T20 tournaments, marking the sport’s first Olympic appearance since Paris 1900.

Venue Confirmed: Pomona Fairplex

The cricket matches will be hosted at a temporary stadium at the Fairplex in Pomona, a 500-acre event complex located roughly 35 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles. The Fairplex, known for hosting the LA County Fair since 1922, is a vibrant hub for concerts, trade shows, and cultural events.

LA28’s choice to use existing infrastructure underlines its commitment to sustainability and efficient planning.

“We’ve promised the world an incredible Olympic Games and today we’re proud to share the plan that will make it happen,” said LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover. “Los Angeles is the epicentre of sports, culture and entertainment, and every venue selected for the 2028 Games will provide athletes and fans the best possible experience.”

🌍 Global Stage for a Global Sport

Six teams will participate in both the men’s and women’s T20 cricket competitions. The USA men’s team is expected to automatically qualify as the host nation, while the women’s team may need to qualify based on international rankings. This inclusion of cricket brings enormous excitement, especially in countries where the sport enjoys passionate followings.

What It Means

The reintroduction of cricket to the Olympic stage is a massive milestone. With billions of fans across Asia, Australia, the UK, and the Caribbean — and a growing audience in the United States — cricket’s Olympic comeback is expected to elevate the sport’s global appeal and development.

The LA28 Games, set to be held from July 14 to 30, promise to blend innovation with tradition. Final schedules for the cricket matches will be announced closer to the event, but the anticipation has already begun.

Cricket’s Olympic return isn’t just about medals — it’s about global recognition, legacy, and expanding horizons.
