Cortalim MLA Antonio Vas Conducts Surprise Visit to MRF Garbage Treatment Plant at Zuarinagar

Cortalim, 25th September 2024: Shri Antonio Vas, MLA of Cortalim Constituency, conducted an unexpected visit to the MRF Garbage Treatment Plant of V.P. Sancoale in Zuarinagar this evening. He was accompanied by Shri Siddesh Desai from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and Shri Sahil from Goa Waste Management.

During the inspection, water samples were taken at the plant, and GSPCB is expected to submit a detailed report within a week. The team identified several irregularities at the site, prompting MLA Vas to direct the officials to expedite their site inspection report and submit it to the relevant departments, with a copy forwarded to his office.

The visit was prompted by ongoing concerns regarding the contamination of a nearby nullah, which spans over 10 kilometers from Zuarinagar, passing through Sindolim and Bandolem lake, before draining into the Zuari River at the Cortalim junction. Leachates and polluted, foul-smelling water from the plant have been seeping into the nullah, causing severe inconvenience to residents of Sindolim and Sancoale village who are forced to endure the stench.

MLA Vas has expressed his commitment to resolving this issue promptly, ensuring proper management and enforcement of pollution control measures at the plant to protect the environment and safeguard public health. The residents are hopeful that swift action will follow to address this long-standing issue.

Further developments are awaited once the GSPCB submits its report.
