Colva Police Have Arrested Both the Owners of the Bulls Following the Organisation of an Illegal Bull Fight in Seraulim

SERAULIM, GOA 01 May: – In a swift action following a tragic and illegal bullfight, Colva Police have arrested both the owners of the bulls involved in a fatal dhirio held in Seraulim on April 28. The event, conducted in open paddy fields, resulted in the death of a bull from Varca after it sustained severe injuries during a violent clash with a bull from Agacaim.

According to police sources, the injured bull suffered deep wounds to its body and neck and died shortly after the fight. The incident has reignited serious concerns over illegal animal fights still taking place in Goa, despite being banned under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

On Tuesday, April 29, Colva Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the perpetrators. South Goa Superintendent of Police Tikam Singh confirmed the arrests of the bull owners and stated that a search is underway to trace the organisers of the event.

“Such illegal acts of cruelty will not be tolerated. The law will take its course, and we are committed to identifying and booking every individual involved,” said SP Tikam Singh.

Bullfighting, locally referred to as dhirio, was outlawed years ago, but sporadic cases still emerge in remote villages, often disguised as traditional events. Authorities and animal rights organisations are now pushing for tighter surveillance and stricter enforcement to deter such practices.

The death of the Varca bull has shocked the local community and drawn strong condemnation from activists, who are demanding justice and long-term solutions to end illegal animal sports in Goa.
