Cheteshwar Pujara Announces Retirement from Cricket, Bids Emotional Farewell
Indian cricketing stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara has officially announced his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket, bringing an end to a glorious career that spanned over 17 years. Known as the backbone of India’s Test batting lineup, Pujara leaves behind a legacy of grit, patience, and resilience.
In a heartfelt note, Pujara shared his emotions and journey:
“As a little boy from the small town of Rajkot, along with my parents, I set out to aim for the stars; and dreamt to be a part of the Indian cricket team. Little did I know then that this game would give me so much – invaluable opportunities, experiences, purpose, love, and above all a chance to represent my state and this great nation.
Wearing the Indian jersey, singing the anthem, and trying my best each time I stepped on the field – it’s impossible to put into words what it truly meant. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and with immense gratitude I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket.
I would like to thank the BCCI, and Saurashtra Cricket Association for the opportunity and support through my cricket career. Am equally grateful to all the teams, franchises and counties I have been able to represent over the years.
I wouldn’t have made it this far without the invaluable guidance of my mentors, coaches and spiritual guru to them I shall always remain indebted.”
Pujara’s Cricketing Journey
- Test Career: Pujara debuted in 2010 against Australia and went on to play 103 Test matches, amassing over 7,000 runs with 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He was often hailed as India’s “new Wall” after Rahul Dravid, anchoring innings with determination and grit.
- Overseas Performances: His heroic knocks in Australia, including the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, played a pivotal role in India’s historic series win. His resilience against Australia’s fierce pace attack earned him immense respect globally.
- Domestic & County Stints: Beyond international cricket, Pujara was a consistent performer for Saurashtra, leading them to Ranji Trophy success. He also featured in English county cricket, representing clubs like Yorkshire and Sussex.
- ODI Career: While he played a handful of ODIs, it was Test cricket where he left his everlasting mark.
With his retirement, Indian cricket bids farewell to a player who redefined the art of classical Test batting in the modern era. His calmness at the crease, ability to absorb pressure, and never-say-die spirit will remain etched in cricketing history.
Fans, teammates, and cricket experts across the globe have flooded social media with tributes, thanking him for his monumental contributions to the sport.
