Porvorim 28/08/2024 Celebrating Citizenship Honoring Mr. Joseph Pereira’s Journey to Indian Citizenship

Today marks a significant and joyous occasion as we proudly present the Citizenship Certificate to Mr. Joseph Pereira under the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. This moment not only highlights the transformative power of legislation but also celebrates the inclusivity and generosity of India as a nation.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, stands as a testament to India’s commitment to providing refuge and citizenship to individuals who have faced persecution in neighboring countries. This Act, now further strengthened by the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, grants citizenship to members of the Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities who migrated from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan before December 31, 2014.

Mr. Joseph Pereira’s story is one of resilience and faith. Originally of Goan descent, Mr. Pereira migrated to Pakistan before the Liberation of Goa, where he lived until making the decision to return to India on September 11, 2013. His deep-rooted connection to India and his Goan heritage made him eligible under the provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and today, we are honored to officially recognize him as a citizen of India.

This occasion is more than a formal ceremony; it is a celebration of identity, belonging, and the unyielding spirit of those who seek to make India their home. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Joseph Pereira on this momentous achievement. His journey reflects the broader narrative of India’s enduring commitment to humanity and justice.

We also take this opportunity to express our profound gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji. Their leadership in enacting and implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act has paved the way for individuals like Mr. Pereira to embrace their rightful place in the Indian family.

As we conclude this momentous event, we look forward to welcoming many more individuals who share in our values and aspirations. Today, we celebrate not just citizenship, but the unity and diversity that make India truly exceptional.
