BJP MP Tejasvi Surya’s Sarcastic Social Media Post Sparks Political Row Over RCB IPL Win Celebrations

Bengaluru, June 6: A tongue-in-cheek social media post by BJP MP from Bengaluru South, Tejasvi Surya, has ignited a political storm in Karnataka, drawing sharp reactions across party lines. In a satirical message directed at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, Surya credited the duo for “winning the IPL trophy” for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), mocking their visible presence during the team’s victory celebrations.

“We, RCB fans, are indebted to CM Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar for winning us the IPL after 18 years,” Surya posted on X (formerly Twitter), adding, “They displayed incredible cricketing and leadership skills on the field and brought our club this long elusive glory.”

The sarcastic remarks were aimed at what the BJP claims was excessive political showboating by the Congress leadership following RCB’s historic maiden IPL title win. The government had hosted a grand felicitation ceremony for the team, which turned chaotic due to what Surya described as “poor arrangement of security measures.”

In a further jab, Surya wrote, “We are also very upset about Virat Kohli, other players and the RCB Management for poor arrangement of the security measures at the program organised to honour CM & DK and their families for winning us the trophy.”

He continued, “Good that RCB Management is arrested and police commissioner is suspended. They are primarily responsible for security in Bengaluru.”

Ending his post with a final barb, the BJP leader said, “Anyways, CM and DKS can now go back to Chinnaswamy Stadium to start practising for their next IPL season,” followed by the hashtag #StateofAffairsKarnataka.

Reactions Pour In

Congress leaders dismissed Surya’s post as “juvenile sarcasm” and accused the BJP of being rattled by the popularity of the Congress leadership in Karnataka. “The people of Karnataka are celebrating, but BJP leaders can’t digest it. Tejasvi Surya should focus on real issues,” said a senior Congress spokesperson.

BJP supporters, meanwhile, amplified the post, calling it a bold commentary on politicization of sports and misuse of public resources for PR events.

RCB fans online appeared divided, with some appreciating the humor while others urged political leaders not to drag cricket into partisan debates.

The post also comes amid growing scrutiny over crowd management during the felicitation event, where large gatherings led to safety concerns. While no arrests of RCB officials have been officially confirmed, Surya’s comment alludes to wider frustrations with event planning and security accountability.

As Karnataka’s political climate heats up ahead of the upcoming civic elections, this episode may further deepen the rift between the state government and the BJP opposition.
