Bihar Achieves Two Guinness World Records in Madhubani Painting and Buddhist Singing Bowl Ensemble

Patna, April 27, 2025 β€”
In a proud moment for Bihar, the state has achieved two prestigious Guinness World Records in the fields of traditional art and spiritual performance. The Guinness officials formally handed over the certificates to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at a special ceremony organized at the Pataliputra Sports Complex in Patna, marking a historic day for the state’s cultural and spiritual legacy.

A Monumental Tribute through Madhubani Art

The first world record was achieved in the category of the largest Madhubani painting. The artwork, sprawling across 18.69 square meters, was crafted under the meticulous guidance of eminent Madhubani artist Bauaa Devi and her team at the Madhubani Painting Institution.
The painting was dedicated to Padma Shri Jagdamba Devi, who is regarded as one of the pioneers responsible for taking Madhubani art to the national and international stage.
The artwork reflects the intricate designs and mythological themes typical of Madhubani art, capturing the essence of Bihar’s rich cultural traditions. Artists from different parts of the state collaborated for days to complete this masterpiece, demonstrating not only their skills but also their deep respect for the legacy of Jagdamba Devi.

Spiritual Harmony in Bodhgaya

The second record was set in Bodhgaya, one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world.
A total of 375 Buddhist monks, ranging from five years old to 70 years, gathered at Bodhgaya to participate in a Singing Bowl Ensemble.
The event created an awe-inspiring spiritual ambiance as the resonant sound of singing bowls, played together in harmony, echoed across the sacred land.
This ensemble is now officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest gathering of Buddhist monks performing a singing bowl meditation. The performance was not only a record-breaking event but also an emblem of peace, unity, and the deep-rooted spiritual traditions of Bihar.

Celebration of Bihar’s Rich Legacy

While addressing the gathering after receiving the certificates, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his deep pride and happiness over Bihar’s twin achievements.
He said,

“These world records are a testament to Bihar’s glorious past and vibrant present. Through the artistic brilliance of Madhubani painters and the spiritual harmony created by our Buddhist monks, we have shown the world the cultural richness and the spiritual strength of our state.”

He also praised the organizers, artists, monks, and all participants who made these achievements possible. Nitish Kumar emphasized that Bihar’s heritage, both artistic and spiritual, would continue to inspire generations to come.

Significance of the Achievements

  • Madhubani Painting: One of the oldest and most famous forms of Indian folk art, originating from the Mithila region of Bihar. The record will boost efforts to preserve and promote this traditional art form globally.
  • Singing Bowl Ensemble: Singing bowls are often used in Buddhist practices for meditation and healing. The large-scale ensemble symbolizes peace and collective spiritual strength, reinforcing Bodhgaya’s importance as a global center of Buddhism.

Conclusion

Bihar’s entry into the Guinness World Records through these two categories showcases the enduring legacy of its cultural and spiritual traditions. It also sets a new benchmark for future generations to uphold and celebrate Bihar’s priceless heritage.
