Acid Attack Shocks Dhargal: One Caught in Rapid Police Action

30 June 2025, Goa : In a deeply disturbing case that has sent shockwaves across Goa, a 17-year-old boy from Dhargal, Pernem, was grievously injured in an acid attack while waiting for a bus to attend college early Monday morning. The horrifying incident took place around 7:45 AM, and a call was received by District Hospital Mapusa at 8:20 AM informing police of the assault.

An unidentified person riding a scooter reportedly threw acid on the boy and fled the scene, leaving the minor with serious burn injuries. The victim is currently receiving medical treatment at Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim.

Upon receipt of the distress call, Pernem Police swiftly launched an investigation team led by PI Sachin Lokre, along with PSI Vivek Halarnkar, PSI Pravin Shemepurushkar, PSI Prathmesh Parsekar, PSI Tukaram Chodankar, PSI Sahil Naik, and supporting police staff. The crime scene was cordoned off, forensic experts and a dog squad were deployed, and key evidence—including the acid—was seized and documented.

An FIR was registered under FIR No. 41/2025 at Pernem Police Station, invoking Sections 124(1) and 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 8(2) of the Goa Children’s Act, based on the complaint of the victim’s father, Mr. Umesh Shetye.

Acid Attack – One Caught

Following an intensive and coordinated investigation, the accused in the case, Mr. Nilesh s/o Gajanand Dessai (46), a resident of Dabiwadi, Kalane, Dodamarg, Maharashtra, was tracked and apprehended from Mapusa Industrial Estate. The arrest was made possible with joint efforts from the Pernem, Mandrem, and Mapusa police teams.

Revenge – The Motive?

In a shocking twist, sources have revealed that the acid attack may have been driven by revenge. Allegedly, the accused’s daughter had died by suicide just last month. She was admitted to Goa Medical College (GMC) for treatment but tragically passed away. While no official confirmation has yet been provided, there is speculation that the accused may have blamed the acid attack victim in some manner related to this personal tragedy.

The case is now being further investigated by PSI Sahil Naik under the guidance of PI Sachin Lokre.

Authorities have assured the public of a thorough and fair investigation, and the state police have vowed to deliver justice in this heinous act.
