Nilkant Halankar Minister for Fisheries   Inaugurates Special Free Vaccination & Education Campaign for Stray and Pet Dogs in Bardez Taluka

In a significant step towards promoting animal welfare and public health, Shri. Nilkant Halarnkar, Minister for Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, inaugurated a Special Free Vaccination & Education Campaign in Bardez Taluka on February 21, 2025. The initiative, organized by the Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services in collaboration with several NGOs, aims to vaccinate stray and pet dogs while raising awareness about responsible pet ownership and animal care.

The event kicked off with a Children’s Rally, featuring a Digital Awareness Vehicle and a Doggie Float Parade, flagged off by the Minister from Sriram Vidya Mandir School in Colvale. The rally aimed to engage the community, especially the younger generation, in understanding the importance of animal welfare and the role of vaccination in preventing diseases like rabies.

The campaign will run from February 24 to February 28, 2025, covering all wards and panchayats in Bardez Taluka. During this period, stray and owner dogs will receive free vaccinations, and non-neutered stray dogs will undergo sterilization procedures. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to control the stray dog population and ensure the health and safety of both animals and residents.

Speaking at the inauguration, Shri. Nilkant Halarnkar emphasized the importance of community participation in such initiatives. “This campaign is not just about vaccinating dogs but also about educating the public on the need for responsible pet ownership and the benefits of sterilization. Together, we can create a safer and healthier environment for both humans and animals,” he said.

Dr. Nitin Naik, Director of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, along with other officials, were also present at the event. Dr. Naik highlighted the collaborative efforts of the department and NGOs in making the campaign a success. “We are committed to ensuring the well-being of animals and reducing the risk of zoonotic diseases. This campaign is a step forward in achieving that goal,” he stated.

The initiative has been widely appreciated by local residents and animal welfare activists, who have lauded the government’s proactive approach to addressing the issue of stray animals. The campaign is expected to benefit thousands of dogs and contribute to a healthier, more harmonious coexistence between humans and animals in the region.
