20th Maritime States Development Committee Meeting: Goa’s Role in India’s Maritime Vision

Goa, 13 09 2024 – The 20th Maritime States Development Committee (MSDC) Meeting, chaired by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, saw the gathering of key figures in India’s maritime sector. The meeting, held in the presence of Minister of State Shri Shantanu Thakur, Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Admiral D.K. Joshi, state ministers, chairpersons of various boards, and esteemed dignitaries, was a significant step toward India’s maritime future.

A key highlight of the event was the launch of the Indian Maritime Center by Shri Sonowal, marking a pivotal milestone in strengthening India’s maritime capabilities. The center aims to drive innovation, research, and training within the industry, positioning India as a global leader in maritime affairs.

Furthering the agenda of progress, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed under the Sagarmala Pariyojana initiative, aimed at boosting development in coastal states, with a particular focus on Goa. These agreements are set to enhance infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, and improve connectivity, all contributing to Goa’s ambition of becoming a global cruise hub.

In his address, a representative from Goa expressed gratitude to Shri Sonowal for his unwavering support in Goa’s transformation journey. He highlighted four key areas critical for future growth: Coastal Community Development, Port-Led Industrialization, Sustainable Marine Ecosystem Protection, and the integration of Digital and Smart Port solutions.

“The MSDC meeting has laid the foundation for a clear roadmap, focusing on port-led development that aligns with Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. We are confident that Goa will play a crucial role in realizing this vision and emerging as a central hub for maritime activities,” the representative remarked.

The meeting underscored the collective commitment of the Union Government, maritime states, and industry stakeholders to enhance India’s maritime infrastructure, ensuring sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
