In a major escalation of trade tensions, the United States has officially imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on imports from India. The Department of Homeland Security, through the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), issued a public notice confirming that the new duties will come into effect from tomorrow.

According to the notice, the move follows President Donald Trump’s Executive Order signed on August 6, which directed the imposition of higher tariffs on Indian goods. The additional levy will apply to a broad spectrum of Indian products, detailed in the annexe attached to the notification.

Earlier this month, President Trump had announced that the overall tariff on Indian imports would be raised to 50 per cent, citing New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil in defiance of US warnings. The White House has described this as a necessary penalty, branding India’s stance as “unhelpful” to Washington’s broader geopolitical agenda.

Reacting strongly, India termed the secondary sanctions as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” New Delhi has reiterated that it will take all possible measures to safeguard its national interest, including exploring countermeasures and deepening trade ties with alternative markets.

The development is expected to impact multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, textiles, steel, and information technology equipment, all of which feature prominently in India’s export basket to the US. Economists warn that the move could further strain the already delicate trade relationship between the two countries, potentially spilling over into diplomatic and strategic spheres.

With the tariffs set to take effect tomorrow, businesses on both sides of the globe are bracing for disruptions, while policymakers in New Delhi prepare their response to Washington’s latest move.
